To : The minister of Tampines.

We,students of Pasir Ris Secondary School, are residents of Tampines. We are writing to you this letter regarding the observation that we have made about the current playgrounds in Tampines.

There are many different types of children in Singapore. There are children who are blind, disabled children, children suffering from down syndrome, children with terminal diseases, abused children with emotional scars and many more. They may be different physically or mentally but no matter what, they are still children and we all know that children want to have fun and the place they turn to for fun is playgrounds. However, we find this a problem as the playgrounds don't cater to the variety of the children's needs.

It has come to our attention that the playgrounds in Tampines are all very fundamental and lacks purpose and space. Playgrounds should be the place for children to play and learn in a safe environment. We noticed that most playgrounds, not only in Tampines but all over Singapore, only have slides, ladders, swings, bridges and other minor things such as hopscotch. This shows that the playgrounds are very inconvinient for children with special needs. Moreover, the playgrounds are not educational for the children. We would like to suggest that the concept of the playgrounds should change to satisfy the needs of all types of children and necessary adjustments should be made.

The first thing that should be altered, is the surroundings of the playground. Safety is the number one priority and therefore, playgrounds should provide safe environment. Padded floor will ensure the safety of the children. Playgrounds with sand base will more likely be a problem because eventhough sand could cushion a fall , it could get into the children eyes and therefore, causing itchiness. In fact, wheelchair are easier to be wheeled in padded, smooth floors compared to sand base. So, we recommend that the base playgrounds should be padded, to ensure the safety of the children if they happen to fall.

Next, the most important thing that should be altered is the play systems. The play systems should be more creative yet simple, in order to allow the children to learn while they play. The obstacles in the playgrounds should not be too complicated or dangerous as it may be too difficult for the physically handicapped children as they have weak legs, hands or spine. We also hope that playgrounds will have ramps instead of stairs or ladders as climbing up the stairs or ladders is a difficult task for the physically disabled children.

The last thing that should be altered, is the colour and the mood of the playground. We suggest that playgrounds should have brighter and more vibrant colours to bring out the positiveness. It has been proven that colours affect the children's mood and the more vibrant the colour, the better it is. This focuses more on abused children with emotional scars.

Overall, we hope you would look through our suggestion and give much thought to it. It would definately benefit all the children. Thank you for your attention.

How is our playground eco-friendly?
Our playground is eco-friendly based on the materials we have used to built our playground. We have come up with certain ideas to think of the recycled materials that can be used. Examples are, we used the things that can be found at home which is known to be reused things. The things are such as straws, cottons and ice-cream sticks. Our treehouses and almost all the materials used are actually cardboards.
How is our playground linked to Bridge to Terabithia?
There are many ways whereby our playground is linked to the movie. An example would be, the bridge. The bridge was inspired by the bridge Jesse had built in recognition of Leslie's death. Second would be the rope which is known to be the 'enchanted rope' to get to Terabithia. Third is the Art Room. We were inspired to built it because of Jesse's passion and love for Art. Lastly would be the treehouses. It is basically because, in the movie the treehouses was like the main set in the movie. We were also inspired by it.
How does our playground help the children?
Firstly, we built this playground especially for children who are emotionally scared. These children are known to have difficulties in expressing themselves through talking. Therefore, we've made a decision to make an Art room for them as we strongly agree that by building it, a child would be able to express himself/herself better by drawing. Drawing is also a way of expressing someone's feelings. Apart from that, they can also share problems with other children like them. The next thing would be the see-saw and the swing. For it to function, a minimum of 2 or more people are needed to use it. Therefore, this gives the child to foster a good relationship between other children. This also teaches them about co-ordination and teamwork. Next would be the 'flying fox'. Children might have difficulties getting on it, that is why support is needed. With that, children will feel a sense to support each other. Apart from that, it is to let them overcome their fear of heights and to gain confidence. Lastly would be the the ramp where a child needs the use of a rope to get up. This teaches the child about determination in reaching a goal. Apart from that, they would also need the support of other children. This can make them realise that endurance and determination is important in pursuing a goal. In conclusion, all these are able to help the children in their future.

How is our playground eco-friendly ?
Materials used for our playground are mostly either recycled or reused such as cardboard, straws,cotton,ice-cream sticks and strings. We use these materials as they are very suitable for the playground as we need, strong, stable materials to make the playground firm. We only bought a base that costed less than $5. My groupmates and I believe that we should use as little material as possible so as to contribute to our environment by the 3R’s.

How is our playground linked to Bridge to Terabithia ?
It is linked by the treehouses, the rope, bridge and the art room. The treehouse is inspired by the treehouse Jesse and Leslie built together. The rope was linked to our playground as Leslie and Jesse used the rope to enter their secret world, ‘Terabithia’. The bridge in our playground, connects one treehouse to another. Like in Bridge to Terabithia, Jesse built a bridge connecting the normal world and Terabithia. The art room is inspired by Jesse’s passion for art.

How do our playground help the children ?
Our playground special features such as cotton as the padding on the ground,so that children will not hurt themselves when they fall. The art room is for the children to express their feeling through either drawing or writing as it can be difficult for them to express themselves by talking as they have social issues. The see-saw and the swing, has the same main purpose, that is , it needs 2 people to function. It is like the saying ‘ we need 2 hands to clap’. This is a great advantage for the children as this enables them to trust other people and to expand their circle of friends. The rope, leading up to the tree house, will give the idea of the children to be resilient to achieve what they want in their life. It will give them the sense of determination and bravery. This is also a good advantage as it helps boost the child’s confidence.

How is our playground eco-friendly ?

The materials that we used for our playground are cardboard,straws,strings,cotton,ice-cream sticks. These materials are reused and recycled. We try to limit our usage of materials so as to save the environment and trees. Our materials do not pose a threat to the environment. Our total budget is only $2 and we used it to buy the base.

How is our playground linked to Bridge to Terabithia ?

Our playground is inspired by Bridge to Terabithia so there are many things that are linked to it.First, there are two "treehouses" in our playground and it was inspired by Jess and Leslie's treehouse in Terabithia. The bridge linking the two "treehouses" was inspired by the bridge Jess had built in Terabithia. The rope swing between the two "treehouses" was inspired by the rope swing which Jess and Leslie had to pass through to get to Terabithia. Then,we had an art room in our playground. The art room was inspired by Jess's passion for art and drawing.

How do our playground help the children ?

First,we have padded floors which prevents the children from any injuries when they fall.Next, our art room is built so that children can express themselves using art therapy.Art theraphy helps the children to reduce their stress, work through traumatic experiences and increase cognitive abilities. Then,we have the seesaw and the swing. The seesaw and the swing needs two people in order for it to function and so,this enables the children to build friendship and make friends. This allow them to have a better relationship with everyone.Last but not least,we have the rope swing. The rope swing helps the children to build their confidence in terms of heights. This can help to improve their self-esteem.

2b. Write a 100-word explanation as to why you had chosen the specific recycled materials for your model.
For our model, the materials used were cardboard,straws,strings,ice-cream sticks, cotton, glue and scotchtape.we mainly used cardboard for our model because in our opinion, cardboard is very strong, solid and reliable. It is also very easy to work with.We used cardboard for the base,"treehouses",the art room and the swing.Next,we used straws to build the swing stand. We used reused straws to build the swing stand because it already had the straight shape and it is also easy to work with.We used strings to represent the ropes for the swing and the rope swing because it is flexable. The ice-cream sticks were used for the fence because not only are the ice-cream sticks colourful, they are also stable and solid. They too, have a good fence shape. The cotton were used as the floor because it resembles padded floor.(147 words)
